This checklist organizes filing logistics. It does not certify that a packet is legally complete or decide which forms or relief apply to a particular case.
Before you submit
Confirm you are using the correct process and current forms
Check signatures and required attachments
Check whether your county requires local forms or cover sheets
Confirm the correct courthouse / filing location
Check whether e-filing is available or required
Confirm the current filing fee or fee-waiver documents
If filing in person or by mail
Prepare the required original and copies
Follow the court's payment instructions
For mail filing, include the return-envelope materials the court requires
Keep a complete copy of exactly what you submitted
After submission
Confirm the filing was accepted - submitted does not always mean filed
Keep the filed / stamped copy
Record the case number if one was assigned
Read any clerk rejection or correction notice before changing the papers
Use the filed or signed copy for hearing dates and service instructions
Before service
Confirm which documents must be served
Confirm who may serve them
Confirm the permitted service method
Check timing against the filed notice, signed order, current rules, and method of service
Keep or file the correct proof of service as required
