Family-Law Hearing Preparation Checklist
Organization before, during, and after court - not courtroom strategy
Important boundary
Your filed notice, signed orders, department instructions, and current local rules control. This checklist does not tell you what argument to make, what evidence to offer, or what result to request.
Before the hearing
Read the filed notice and signed orders carefully
Confirm date, time, department, and whether the appearance is remote or in person
Check your county / department instructions
Organize filed papers, proofs of service, existing orders, and documents you are allowed to use
Verify any filing or service dates independently
Write down questions about procedure to ask the court self-help center or an attorney if needed
Day of court
Bring or have access to the filed papers and current orders
Arrive / log in early enough to follow court instructions
Keep your notes and documents organized
Listen carefully for what the judge actually orders
Do not rely on memory alone for future dates or filing instructions
After the hearing
Review the minute order or written order when available
Compare any written order with what you understood happened in court
Record the next court date
Record any court-ordered filing, service, mediation, or follow-up date
Use the signed / filed order - not your notes - as the controlling source
